What is EFT?

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), often referred to as “tapping,” is a form of psychological acupressure that combines elements of traditional Chinese medicine with modern psychology. Developed by Gary Craig in the 1990s, EFT involves tapping on specific meridian points on the body while focusing on emotional issues or physical sensations. This technique aims to balance the body’s energy system and resolve negative emotions and physical symptoms.

How Does EFT Work?

EFT is based on the premise that negative emotions and physical discomfort are linked to disruptions in the body’s energy system. These disruptions can be caused by traumatic experiences, stress, or negative thought patterns. By tapping on meridian points while concentrating on a specific issue, EFT helps to restore balance and release these disruptions, leading to emotional and physical relief.

The Basic EFT Process:
  1. Identify the Issue: Focus on a specific problem or emotion you want to address. This could be a feeling of anxiety, a memory of a traumatic event, a physical pain, or a limiting belief.

  2. Rate the Intensity: On a scale from 0 to 10, rate the intensity of your distress related to the issue. This provides a baseline to measure progress.

  3. Setup Statement: Create a setup statement that acknowledges the problem while affirming self-acceptance. The format is: “Even though I have this [problem], I deeply and completely accept myself.”

  4. Tapping Sequence: Tap on the following meridian points while repeating a reminder phrase that keeps the focus on the problem. The sequence usually involves tapping 5-7 times on each point:

    • Karate Chop (KC): The side of the hand.
    • Eyebrow (EB): The beginning of the eyebrow, near the bridge of the nose.
    • Side of Eye (SE): The bone beside the outer corner of the eye.
    • Under Eye (UE): The bone under the eye.
    • Under Nose (UN): The area between the nose and upper lip.
    • Chin (Ch): The area between the lower lip and the chin.
    • Collarbone (CB): Just below the collarbone.
    • Under Arm (UA): About 4 inches below the armpit.
    • Top of Head (TH): The crown of the head.
  5. Re-evaluate: After completing the tapping sequence, rate the intensity of the issue again. Repeat the process until the intensity is reduced to a comfortable level, ideally to 0.

Benefits of EFT

EFT has been found to be effective in treating a wide range of emotional and physical issues, including:

  • Anxiety and Stress: EFT helps to reduce symptoms of anxiety and stress by calming the body’s energy system.
  • Depression: It can alleviate depressive symptoms by addressing the underlying emotional causes.
  • Phobias: EFT is effective in reducing fear and phobias by desensitizing the response to the feared object or situation.
  • Trauma and PTSD: EFT helps to process and release traumatic memories and associated emotions.
  • Chronic Pain: It can reduce physical pain by addressing the emotional stressors linked to the pain.
  • Addictions: EFT aids in managing cravings and breaking free from addictive behaviors.
  • Weight Loss and Eating Disorders: It addresses emotional eating and body image issues, supporting healthier habits.
  • Performance and Confidence: EFT enhances performance in sports, academics, and other areas by boosting confidence and reducing performance anxiety.

Scientific Support and Research

While EFT is considered a complementary therapy, a growing body of research supports its effectiveness. Studies have shown significant improvements in symptoms of anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other conditions following EFT treatment. Research indicates that EFT can lower cortisol levels, which are associated with stress, and improve overall psychological well-being.
